NSF and NIH Fund New Ocean and Human Health Research Centers
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced they are jointly funding four new Centers for Oceans and Human Health, alongside renewing two existing centers, to investigate the impact of various ocean-related issues on human health. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns over the health effects of microplastics, algal blooms, and the broader implications of climate change.
NC C-CAPE, one of these centers, will explore coastal algae’s impact on environmental health, emphasizing how climate change and pollution affect coastal ecosystems and human well-being in North Carolina. Over the next five years, these agencies are investing more than $42 million in interdisciplinary research that brings together biomedical researchers, oceanographers, and community partners.
